Mourning the Loss of Craig Boone: Tragedy Strikes in Fatal Hampton Car Crash

A profound tragedy struck in the early hours of a Sunday morning as Craig Boone, a dedicated VDOT Safety Support Worker, lost his life while providing crucial assistance to a stranded motorist on Interstate 64 in Hampton. The devastating turn of events unfolded when an allegedly intoxicated driver struck him, leaving the community in shock and mourning.

The Virginia State Police received a distress call at approximately 1:15 a.m., alerting them to a two-vehicle collision on the eastbound lanes of I-64, near the Big Bethel overpass.

Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement officers were met with a harrowing sight: a vehicle had collided with a VDOT SSP truck and, tragically, had struck Craig Boone, who had been outside the VDOT vehicle at the time.

Craig Boone, a dedicated 52-year-old VDOT safety service patroller, lost his life instantaneously as a result of the impact.

The police spokesperson revealed that Craig Boone had been diligently assisting a stranded motorist, and the VDOT service vehicle had been positioned correctly on the right shoulder with its arrow board brightly illuminated, ensuring the safety of the scene.

However, this heartbreaking incident took a grave turn when a 2020 Jeep Latitude, driven by 27-year-old Alana F. Diomande from Yorktown, veered off the road onto the right shoulder.

The Jeep scraped against the Ford truck and collided with Craig Boone, who was standing nearby.

Suspicions arose that Alana F. Diomande was operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Due to her refusal to cooperate at the scene, authorities deemed it necessary to conduct a blood withdrawal to assess her level of intoxication.

Subsequently, she was taken into custody and transported to Hampton City Jail, where she faces a series of charges, including driving under the influence, involuntary manslaughter, obstruction, and uttering abusive language.
