7. Is The Weeknd Ethiopian? The Weeknd is of Ethiopian descent. He was born in Toronto, Ontario as the only child of parents Makkonen and Samra Tesfaye, who were both Ethiopian immigrants to Canada in the late ’80s. After his parents split, he was raised by his grandmother.

While “The Hills” is the first track Tesfaye has performed partly in Amharic, it isn’t the first song to feature heavy notes of his Ethiopian background. In February 2012, the Weeknd released a trippy, post-apocalyptic video for “The Knowing”, from 2011’s House of Balloons.
Ethiopian Tribes & Ethnic Groups While the exact number is unknown, there are around 80 tribes or ethnic groups living in Ethiopia. Most of the population belongs to the Amhara or Oromo tribes. The Amhara people live in the Addis Ababa area and are very involved in governing the country and in fostering the economy.

In promotion of the upcoming album, episode seven of the Weeknd’s manager Amir Esmailian ‘s Memento Mori Beats 1 radio show was released on November 27, 2019. The single ” Heartless ” debuted at number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 and later became his fourth number one single on the chart, the following week.
